Originally Aired: August 4, 2017

We are here with Matt founder of We are going to talk about the difference and preference of a Bong vs a Pipe vs a Joint. Matt give our audience a little preview of what we are going to talk about on Wednesday.

I just want to give a big shout out to StrainCentral for originally covering Bongs vs Pipes. I’m adding to the conversation by including Joints. If you’d like to see his original video you can click on the pop-up here.

So let’s talk technical. According to Urban Dictionary a Bong is a device used for smoking various substances, but most commonly marijuana. A bong is filled with water which cools the smoke as it passes through. The bong was invented several thousand years ago in the middle east for smoking of tobacco, but has since become a popular method of smoking marijuana.

A bong is the preferred method if smoking marijuana for many people because it drives the smoke deeper into the user’s lungs faster, thus exposing more of the mucus membranes to the smoke and thus getting the user much higher using less marijuana.

A bong can be made of any material which is impermeable to both air and water. Glass is often considered the best material for fabrication of bongs, because it is easy to clean, durable, and absolutely air and watertight.

Plastic is also popular, but is generally used for bongs which will not be used for a long time, as they tend to develop problems with the seals around the stem and cone piece as they are generally not made with as much care as a glass bong. Other popular materials include ceramic, wood and metal. Basic a bong can be made out of anything as long as it’s non-flammable.

The most basic bong consists of a mouthpiece, chamber, stem and bowl. The bowl is almost always made of metal, as it must be heat resistant in order to allow the substance to burn, although one will often find that the bong is moulded in a single piece made entirely of the same material. Bongs often have a hole on the side called a “carb” to allow air to bypass the stem and allow large amounts of smoke to enter the user’s lungs rapidly.

A Pipe according to Urban Dictionary is a relatively inexpensive and easily concealed smoking device. Typically, a small amount of cannabis is placed in a cone on the end of a metallic cylinder, then lit and inhaled.

Pipes tend not to be the preferred method of ingestion for most cannabis smokers – joints and bongs are easier to smoke, and most pipes cause the user to cough when burning because you’re only using air as the coolant.

And a Joint is a rolled cigarette containing weed instead of tobacco.
